What they expect
Coachability. The failure is almost never the issue. Can you locate your contribution, name what you changed afterwards, and make the lesson specific enough to be real?
A strong signal
A miss you still feel. A behaviour that changed — a new cadence, a checklist, a different question you now ask. Evidence, not a motto.
A weak tell
“I cared too much.” A failure that is actually a secret success. A lesson so generic it could attach to any story.
Why this angle exists
Business school will embarrass you in public, weekly. They need to know you can metabolize that.
Canadian flavour
Ivey written essays have recently asked for a challenge and the lessons. Schulich and Smith both probe failure in live interviews. Undergrad prompts often come as “feedback that was difficult to hear” rather than “biggest failure.”
