Who you are when the prompt is not about work.
What they expect
Whether there is a human being behind the application. Rotman has called these “first date questions” and says they can be answered without preparation. That is only half true. You cannot script them. You can decide in advance that you will answer as yourself, pick one concrete detail, and land on a value.
A strong signal
One object, one reason, one value. A little humour that is actually yours. You do not force a professional moral onto every hobby.
A weak tell
A workshopped joke. Using the emoji question to smuggle in “I’m a leader.” Two applicants from the same counsellor with the same rainy-Sunday answer.
Why this angle exists
Over-coaching is now the default. These questions detect it. They also predict whether you will be bearable at a table for two years.
Canadian flavour
Rotman recorded banks are the richest published source: wallpaper, emoji, three apps, extra hour, favourite season, what you would teach. INSEAD adds hobbies and cultural oddities. Do not recycle a Rotman first-date answer into an Ivey career-management interview.
