VIII
Communication Under Constraint
The format is the exam.
What they expect
Whether you can structure a thought when nobody is nodding. Forty-five seconds to prepare, sixty to ninety to speak, one take, a camera. Content can be average. Panic, rambling, or reading a script is a hard fail.
A strong signal
You answer the question that was asked. You land. You sound like yourself. Eye line is the lens, not a page.
A weak tell
Eyes dropping to notes. Language that does not match the resume. A joke that has been workshopped. Starting over mid-sentence.
Why this angle exists
Kira, VidCruiter, and timed writing exist because live interviews do not scale and because English composure is a classroom requirement. Rotman, Schulich, Smith, Ivey, Alberta, HEC, Queen’s Commerce, Rotman Commerce, Ivey AEO, Schulich BBA, and Sauder BCom all use a timed recorded format.
Canadian flavour
Rotman Full-Time: select candidates, three questions, 90 seconds, official themes include goals and conflict. Schulich: 45s / 90s plus a 5-minute timed written. Smith: three video + one written. Alberta: 45s / 60s. Sauder BCom: 30s / 90s, third question is a creative hypothetical. Rotman Commerce: mix of known-in-advance and random.
Questionnaire
Expand a prompt. Read what they are listening for. Sit the timer if it is a recorded question. Notes stay on this device.
