A reachable next job, not a vibe.

What they expect

A first role that a recruiter at this school could actually place you into — function, industry, city, two or three employers, and why this degree closes a named gap. “Why now” has to be a constraint in your career, not a calendar accident.

A strong signal

You name the job, the gap, and the backup. Short-term and long-term lock together: the first role creates the second. Plan B is a real adjacent path, not “I’ll stay unemployed and reapply.”

A weak tell

Prestige, “broader skill set,” or “I’ll figure it out on campus.” Canadian schools are particularly allergic to an open-ended wander.

Why this angle exists

An MBA or a commerce program is a labour-market product. Admissions is checking yield and career services load, not whether you have a dream.

Canadian flavour

Rotman wants a Toronto-shaped first job (finance, consulting, corporate strategy) unless you can explain otherwise. Ivey pressure-tests hireability from a one-year case program. Sauder will ask if you will work outside Vancouver. International applicants get “Why Canada?” as a work-permit and stay-intent question.
